Once we have the basic things like food and shelter and having good health, the next thing we want is to be happy.
” You can accomplish by kindness what you cannot by force ” – Publilius Syrus
Whether it’s spending more time with your family and friends, buying a new car or going on holidays: we do all these things because we want to be happy. Obviously different people will have different opinions about which of these things will really make you happy; but we do all these things because we want to be satisfied and happy.
But there is an instant way to be happier, this way will also benefit others. And that is to be kind.
Here is a study…
In a study conducted by Dr Sonja Lyubomirsky, psychology professor at University Of California, students were assigned to do five random acts of kindness per week for a period of five weeks. At the end of the experiment, the students levels of happiness had increased by 41.6%. That is a lot.
Every thought we have and every action we take creates new connections in the brain. While, for instance going shopping might make you feel happy for a while, it also creates the desire to do more shopping next time. However, being kind creates a happiness that has a more long-lasting effect. And it’s cheaper! By being kind, you are creating a more positive outlook, which is far more likely to make you happier.
But being kind won’t just make happier, it can also make you healthier. Acts of kindness comes together with emotional warmth, which produces the hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin causes the release of a chemical called nitric oxide in the blood vessels, which expands the blood vessels. This in turn lowers blood pressure and therefore protects the heart. Secondly, oxytocin reduces levels of free radicals and inflammation in the cardiovascular system. This is another way kindness protects you from heart diseases.
It will cause a ripple effect…
” Small Act Of Kindness Creates An Endless Ripple ” – Anonymous
This is another great reason to be kind. When you are kind to someone or do something to help another person, it will create a ripple. That means, the person who you helped will hopefully learn to be kind, and help someone else. This is also known as ”paying it forwards”. Try to remember the last time a stranger did something kind to you, and remember how that made you feel.
